The coin’s design, by Canadian artist Steve Hepburn, combines past and present field hockey in a historic moment: the 125th anniversary of the Stanley Cup! The legendary trophy is the centerpiece of the field, with the meticulous engraving recreating the overlapping stripes that comprise it. The recognizable bowl atop the Cup is an eloquent reminder of its origins: in 1892, Canada’s sixth Governor General donated a silver bowl to be awarded to Canada’s top amateur field hockey team. On the left, the helmetless player evokes the sport as it was played in the late 19th century; on the right, the field hockey player illustrates how the game is played today, 125 years after Lord Stanley’s landmark gift. Also engraved on a banner on the reverse are the commemorative dates “1892” and “2017” and the words “STANLEY CUP”; “125 YEARS / ANS” appears at the foot of the trophy.
